Protect
Your Job, Protect Your Career: What to Know Before
You Run Into Trouble (The
APC Advocate, Fall 2003)
- You only have a right to be represented during
meetings during which you reasonably can conclude that discipline
may result.
- You do not have a right to a representative
when you are just being given documents—even notices of discipline.
- You do not have a right to have union representation
to discuss your work assignment.
- You must assert your right to union representation;
the University is not obligated to tell you about this. When in
doubt, ask for a representative.
- You must be given a reasonable amount of time
to arrange for a representative to be present, but the meeting
may not be unduly delayed so that you can have the representative
of your choice.
- When you are given any notice of pending disciplinary
action, contact your APC
steward immediately; timelines may begin to run that require
immediate attention.
- While APC represents everyone in Unit 4
on all contract matters, only dues-paying
APC members are provided representation by APC before the
State Personnel Board. This is another good reason to join
your Union!
- You should respond to any written reprimand
that you receive; this is your only chance to put your side of
the story on the record—use it.
- Contact
your APC steward immediately if you are suspended (placed
on administrative leave).
- Do not go into any investigatory meeting alone.
- Keep all of your employment-related documents
and correspondence (including emails) at home. If something happens
and you’re placed on suspension, you may no longer have access
to material in your office, and this material may be crucial to
protecting your rights.
- When in doubt, contact
your APC steward!
