Does
Your Campus Have Computer Use Policies?
(The APC Advocate,
Spring 2003)
Do you use a computer on your job?
A fax machine? A telephone? Most likely so. And if so, you're just
as likely in danger of being disciplined for how you use them. On
pages 6-7 of the Spring
2003 issue of The APC Advocate,
you'll find a detailed description of how APC uncovered and addressed
this problem at the Fresno and Bakersfield campuses.
But the problem is far from resolved.
You can bet with virtual certainty that your campus has one or more
policies on the use of computers, phones and fax machines. You also
can bet that violation of those policies can bring the University's
disciplinary hammer down on your head. And you also can bet that
your campus policies on these issues have not been appropriately
bargained with APC—which means the Union has had no opportunity
to build in protections of your rights.
APC has been carving out new areas
of employee (and union) rights in this area, and we're not about
to let up in those efforts.
But your help is needed! Find out
whether your campus and/or your department have any policies on
these topics. If so, forward a copy immediately to APC's Statewide
Office so that we can take appropriate action. As the initial
case at Fresno pointed out so poignantly, the job you save may well
be your own!
